Francesca and I had a day out - we went to Barnes & Noble (Starbucks as an enticement!) at the mall to choose books that we will read and base our lesson plans around this summer. I shared how I select books I want to read, and we discussed the Just Right ! guidelines for choosing a book. Together we decided on Sleeping Freshman Never Lie by David Lubar, (in an unusual twist, the protagonist is a a boy dealing with his first year in high school), Gutsy Girls Young Women Who Dare by Tina Schwager and Michele Schuerger, and Children's Quick & Easy Cookbook by Angela Wilkes. I showed Francesca a picture book that I've had my eye on to add to my library (alas, too price-y right now!), titled Last Night I Swam With A Mermaid (Kimberly Muller, photographs by Michael Muller.) A children's book club event was being held at B & N that day, and we chatted with the store's Community Relations Manager. The outcome was that she allowed Francesca to read aloud Last Night I Swam With A Mermaid to a small group of children ages 5 - 7. She did a great job - the kids, especially the little girls, loved the book and the beautiful illustrations. Francesca was impressed by the children's enthusiasm and excitement about a book, and she herself liked the eco-friendly message of the story. I think she also enjoyed being the center of attention and adoration! (Note to tutor: a recommendation to parents at end of tutoring session: explore opportunities for Francesca to read to younger children, perhaps at local library on the weekend or to family friends'/neighbors' younger children.)
